Tom Quilty 2025

A comms crew of almost thirty gathered at Sassafras for the 2025 Tom Quilty Gold Cup - the national championship of the equine endurance riding community. NTARC, REAST and Ulverstone Radio Operators’ Club members and families made up the comms team, spread over twelve checkpoints in five locations, plus Base. The 140 rider entries produced around 1,700 reports from checkpoints to Base.

Given the problems handling the 24 hours of the event experienced by the comms and checkpoint crews, those of the riders who spent hours in the saddle (as many as around twenty) really gave meaning to “endurance”. This is the third Tasmania run Tom Quilty serviced by Amateur Radio so, though the pain is high, the gain in all its forms must be higher. The pleasure gained from a job well done, together with some post event fun, make a return next time (for those still around -:) , a sure thing.
